Declaration for global peace and for the rights of girls and young women

Proposer: The Guides and Scouts of Finland

The World Conference reflects on the world peace and makes the following statement:

”The 39th World Conference of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts states that Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting remains a global peace movement that unites people from all corners of the

world. As a movement, we see that more than one in six children worldwide (over 473 million) live in conflictaffected areas. We are concerned that girls and young women in crisis contexts often lack opportunities

to build balanced lives and act as agents of change. In such contexts, daily life is focused on survival and caring for others, while prolonged conflict negatively affects both physical and mental health.

Lasting peace improves girls’ access to education, which strengthens their future opportunities and economic independence.

We see Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting help children and young people discover their strengths and reach their full potential. Through this, they learn to engage with others, build relationships, and resolve

differences through dialogue. These skills last a lifetime and support the development of a more peaceful and sustainable future.

As a movement, we care and we affirm that every child and young person has the right to meaningful activities.

Investing in youth development is an investment in peace. Safe and supportive environments, free from violence and fear, strengthen confidence and emotional well-being.

WAGGGS has a key global role in promoting the rights of girls and young women, especially in situations of conflict and crisis. It has both the responsibility and the opportunity to ensure together with its

Member Organisations that Girl Guides and Girl Scouts have the capacity and support to fulfil their role in building resilience and skills. Through Member Organisations, WAGGGS strengthens the Movement’s

ability to support girls living in fragile contexts.

As a Movement, we act and call on world leaders to prioritise peaceful solutions and work towards lasting peace. As Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, we see, we care, and we act.

As a Movement, we advocate for peace across all regions so that girls and young women everywhere have the opportunity to build a better world. We believe that wars and conflicts must be resolved through

dialogue and negotiation, not through human suffering.”
